·         The Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975, when South Vietnam surrendered.

·         The first federal U.S. Mint was established on April 2, 1792.

·         William Chrysler, automaker, was born on April 2, 1875.

·         The first pony express service began on April 3, 1860.

·         Robert Peary, explorer, reached what he believed was the North Pole on April 6, 1909.

·         Henry “Hank” Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s career major-league home run record on April 8, 1974.

·         The Civil War began on April 12, 1861.

·         President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865.

·         The “unsinkable” Titanic struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912.

Here are some fun facts about the month of March: 

·         March is said to “Come in like a lion, and go out like a lamb,” referring to the end of winter and onset of spring in the northern hemisphere. Spring arrives on March 21, and many winter-hibernating animals make their first trips out of their dens in March. 

·         The name March honors the Roman god of war, Mars. 

  • Ohio became the 17th state in 1803 and Nebraska the 37th in 1867, both on March 1.

·         On March 2, 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico. 

·         On March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone. 

·         There are no national holidays in March, so the month is perhaps best known for St. Patrick’s Day – and green beer – on March 17. 

·         An old farmers’ superstition says the first three days of March are unlucky, so if rain falls on these days, they will have poor harvests that year.  

·         Famed baseball player Cy Young was born on March 29, 1867. Other famous births in March: Albert Einstein, Sam Huston, Michelangelo, Andrew Jackson, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Alexander Graham Bell.

·         Many U.S. states got their official start in January, including Alaska (January 3, 1959, becoming the 49th state), Utah (January 4, 1896, becoming the 45th state), New Mexico (January 6, 1912, becoming the 47th state) and Kansas (January 29, 1861, becoming the 34th state)

 ·         On the first of January in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation

 ·         The first American presidential election was held on January 7, 1789

 ·         Martin Luther King, Jr., American civil rights leader, was born on January 15, 1929

 ·         The gold rush was kicked off when gold was discovered in California on January 24, 1848

 ·         The world’s largest diamond, known as the Cullinan diamond, was discovered on January 26, 1905, weighing in at 3106.75 carats, or 1.369 pounds

 ·         Inventor Thomas Edison was granted the first patent for his incandescent light bulb on January 27, 1880

 ·         The U.S. Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in space, killing the seven crew members aboard, on January 28, 1986

 ·         Congress authorized the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s library on January 30, 1815, which birthed the Library of Congress

 ·         Adolf Hitler was named chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933, ushering in one of the world’s darkest times

Special points of interest about  December:

· In early Roman calendars, December was the 10th month., until January and February were added.

· The name December comes from the Latin word for 10.

· Until 46 A.D., December  had only 29 days, but that year Julius Caesar added two more to give December  31 days.

· Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29, 1845.

· December is Universal Human Rights Month.

· More than 2,300 Americans were killed at Pearl Harbor’s U.S. Naval Base during this month in 1941 when the U.S. was attacked by Japanese pilots.
